All Roads Lead From Nome - Part 1: Council Road
I recently traveled to Nome, Alaska to visit one of my daughters, who is finishing up a two year volunteer program there. It was a great opportunity to explore the area during the late spring.
Nome got its start from the discovery of gold on the Seward Peninsula tn the late 1890's. Nome became the major transport hub for the region and even today, the only roads in the region are a few gravel roads leading from Nome to outlying areas.
The Council Road connects Nome to the old mining community of Council, now mostly summer fishing and hunting camps. It follows the coast line east out of Nome for most of the time, before heading inland in a northeasterly direction. While the entire road is 72 miles long, I only traveled about 43 miles along it.
