Jewels of the Russian Far East - Part 3: Commander Islands
In the third part of our voyage to far eastern Russia, we travelled to the Commander Islands, an extension of the Aleutian Island chain that consists of two larger islands, Bering and Mednyl, plus a slew of smaller rocks. First discovered by Capt. Vitus Bering in 1741, when trying to return to Kamchatka, his ship, the St. Peter, ran aground on the rocks just off what is now called Commander Bay on Bering Island.
